What You Will Learn:
The Heavy Mechanical Foundation program equips students with the skills needed to begin careers in the heavy mechanical trades, including heavy‑duty equipment technician, commercial transport mechanic, diesel engine mechanic, and transport trailer technician. Through hands‑on training and theory, students learn to work on complex mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and electronic systems to ensure equipment safety and performance. A work placement provides exposure to real industry environments, standards, and expectations. Graduates gain the foundational training required to enter these trades as apprentices, with pathways leading to three Red Seal certifications and the Diesel Engine Mechanic Provincial Certificate of Qualification. Key skills developed include workplace safety, diesel engine fundamentals, hydraulic systems, air and power brakes, welding and cutting, suspension and steering basics, and general equipment maintenance.

What You Can Expect:
SD83 pays for your tuition to attend full-time. Students pay for all ancillary fees, textbooks, and supplies. Students are responsible to arrange their own reliable transportation to and from campus. The program mixes theory, practical, and real-world shop training to prepare you for a career as an apprentice in the heavy mechanical trades.
