Nursing Unit Assistant

What You Will Learn:

Students learn the skills and responsibilities of a Nursing Unit Assistant including: medical terminology and abbreviations, coordinating patient/resident appointments, transcribing and processing physicians' orders, communicating with other healthcare departments and hospitals, assembling/maintaining patient/resident charts, performing keyboarding and data-entry responsibilities, arranging patient/resident tests and receiving results, telephone answering, and receiving and directing visitors.

Key Skills learned: communication, organization, attention to detail, and familiarity with healthcare procedures and documentation.

What You Can Expect:

From September to December all scheduled classes are online with live lectures. In mid-January, students come to campus (Vernon or Kelowna) for face-to-face classes on Saturdays. Weekday classes remain online. All lectures have mandatory attendance. A 125 hour supervised practicuum is inlcuded - the location is determined by the hospital located near the campus students apply.




What You Will Earn:

    • 20 grade 12 credits towards graduation (5 courses)
    • Nursing Unit Assistant Certificate (upon successful completion of the program)

  • Prerequisites:
    • Be on-track to graduate.
    • English 12 (minimum 60%)
    • Clean criminal record check.
    • Negative TB test.
    • Basic computer skills with the ability to type at least 40 words per minute.
  • Program Length:
    • 439-hours
  • Program Dates:
    • Apply in December (of the previous year) for Fall intake in September
