Medical Lab Assistant

What You Will Learn:

Students are trained to perform the practical components of collecting, sorting and preparing patient samples for further testing and analysis.

Key Skills Learned: Specimen Collection and Processing; Laboratory Procedures and Equipment Handling; Safety and Quality Assurance; Anatomy, Physiology, and Medical Terminology; Electrocardiography (ECG); Computer and Administrative Skills.

What You Can Expect:

The majority of training is completed online and consists of five theory courses. There is an approximately 6-week long clinical practicum conducted in a hospital or laboratory (exact length varies according to facility availability). Most students complete the program in 12 months (including the full time practicum). They have 30 weeks to complete each course and must complete the entire program in two years. Students are encouraged to complete in under one year (extensions are not granted).


What You Will Earn:

    • 8 grade 12 credits towards graduation (2 courses)
    • Medical Laboratory Assistant Certificate (upon successful completion of the program)

  • Prerequisites:
    • Be on-track to graduate.
    • Grade 12 or equivalent.
    • Clean criminal record check.
    • Basic computer skills with the ability to type at least 40 words per minute.
  • Program Length:
    • Approximately 1 year, including practicum.
  • Program Dates:
    • Ongoing.
