Teens Check Out Trade and Tech Careers at TRU

Posted on 2024-06-07 07:00:00 +0000 UTC
TRU Trades Administrator Dwayne Geiger gestures to the ceiling showing off the glass pipes with flowing water while some students gaze above. The piping trades was one of several trades highlighted in the tour.

It was a field trip day this week for 43 Grade 9-12 students from Salmon Arm and JL Jackson secondaries.

SD83 Careers, MineralsEd and Thompson Rivers University sponsored the students to investigate careers in the Trades and Technology sector, specifically through the lens of mining and mineral exploration. Students were split into two group to check out the facilities of two specific faculties: Trades and Engineering. In trades, Administrator Dwayne Geiger showed students the fairly new facility which featured specialized trades like instrumentation, power engineering, millwright, heating & air conditioning and the piping trades. When it came to Engineering, Recruiter Robert Wisla outlined the many varied disciplines of mine engineering and how TRU has two Bachelor of Engineering degrees in software and computer engineering. Wisla was also able to show students how technology is growing in the mineral extraction industry with the growth of autonomous trucks, drones and robots.

TRU Robotics Professor Dr. Geoff Fink shows off “Go 1”, a robotic dog which is sitting on its hind legs in the begging position. Fink says robots like Go 1 will be able to enter dangerous areas to do mapping for geological engineers in the near future.

Canada’s active mines created over 108 billion dollars towards the country’s gross domestic product in its most recent annual analysis.

JL Jackson Grade 10 Student Walter Bullan (Yellow T-Shirt) accepts an electrician’s tool belt from another student as a demonstration as to how light some electrical tools are in some cases.

This was the final district career field trip in SD83 this school year. The district did nearly 20 trips and spotlights for the year and we’re always looking to do more. If you have any ideas on what would be a great option to check out when it comes to careers, please contact George Richard via text or phone at 778-824-1188 or email grichard@sd83.bc.ca.
