SD83 Students Will “Move the World” Next Month
SD83 Careers and a consortium of businesses from BC’s trucking industry will host a full-day field trip in Kamloops on Thursday, October 10th.
Up to 45 Grade 10-12 students from across the district will motor down the Trans-Canada highway to visit three companies that specialize in the transportation, distribution and logistic industry. The students will be split into three groups once in Kamloops and will be able to tour the operations of Arrow Transportation Systems, Bandstra Transportation Systems and the LOTS Group. Students will learn about careers they can get into right out of high school to other careers that need trades or technical training or full-fledged university undergraduate and graduate degrees. A survey done by the City of Salmon Arm years ago estimated that nearly 15-hundred transport trucks travel through the community in a single day while CP Rail states at least 30 transport trains pass through the Shuswap daily. The Canadian freight and logistics industry is expected to contribute over 106 billion dollars to the country’s economy this year and is estimated to grow to 139 billion by 2030.
If students are interested in participating in the tour, they need to visit their career coordinator or clerk at their neighbourhood high school to pick up a parent permission form and media release form. If you wish to learn more details about the event, don’t hesitate to reach out to SD83 Career Education Coordinator George Richard by texting or calling 778-824-1188 or you can email grichard@sd83.bc.ca.
