SD83 Students Play and Learn in Dual Credit Program
The kids are about to set off on an adventure.
The instructor has left instructions for the toddlers and primary children that Mr. Goop has taken some of her things and she would like them back. However, they have to go fishing for them, with their hands.
The Mr. Goop play station is one of five centres created by students of the SD83/Okanagan College Early Childhood Education (ECE) Dual Credit Program as part of a project for their class. Instructor Diane Little wanted the students to create a “provocation” which allowed toddlers to explore and develop their sensory skills through play. Once the student explained the station to Little and her peers, the students could jump in to play in the station just as if they were three to five year olds.
The students have been involved with the program for nearly two months and all of them have loved what they have learned. But it doesn’t come without its challenges and surprises. Grade 12 Salmon Arm Secondary student Andrea Bracken says she could not believe how interactive the course is, especially the online portion. “I thought the instructor would be on her screen just talking for the three hour class. We are able to go into break out sessions to be able to share our thoughts. It helps us with a break.”
Grade 12 Salmon Arm Secondary student Amaraya Derksen says the pace of learning has certainly intensified working in a college setting. “Initially, our small assignments were very close together. One day we get an assignment and then we have to have that ready for the next class to receive the next assignment. I certainly felt the pressure of getting things in on time.”
For Grade 12 Salmon Arm Secondary student Emmy Heaver, the program has been a great fit for her. “(Childcare) is something I always wanted to do. I really enjoy both of the teachers, I enjoy the assignments and I enjoy the reading responses where we can reflect on our learning.” All five of the students wish to go farther in their learning beyond this program. Four of the five students wish to carry on to complete their Diploma in Early Child Education at Okanagan College within one year of leaving this program while another has applied to attend Douglas College’s program in New Westminster. One of the students wishes to set up her own daycare once they have the necessary experience and education behind them.
