Mounties Hoping to Find Their SD83 Recruit Next Year
A select few SD83 students will have an opportunity to receive police training next year.
The Jean Minguy Memorial RCMP Youth Academy will be held at the Vernon Army Camp from May 25th-30th, 2025. The Vernon school district and the RCMP have collaborated to host this program for 16 year old students and older (as of May 1st, 2025) interested in police services or law enforcement as a career. 30 students from ten school districts can be part of the camp which simulates a police academy environment. Students will be instructed in law, its procedures and the role of police officers in the community.
All potential participants must complete a fitness test between March 31st-April 4th and attend a parent meeting on May 7th in Vernon. Students are strongly urged to train for this test to give themselves the best opportunity to succeed in the application process.
Interested students and families do have to pay three-hundred-fifty dollars for the week-long course which includes meals, lodging and all supplies. One-hundred dollars of that fee is non-refundable. All applicants can receive an application package through their career coordinator at their neighbourhood school or contact SD83 Career Education Coordinator George Richard at grichard@sd83.bc.ca. It works best if students either digitally fill in the application as much as possible or use a pen. The deadline for applications is January 31st, 2025.
