Posted on 2025-04-14 07:00:00 +0000 UTC

SD83 Student are being offered an exclusive and potentially only one-time opportunity to gain insight into high end math careers.

SD 83 Careers, the Canadian Institute of Actuaries (CIA) and Simon Fraser University’s Actuary Sciences Faculty are hosting a full-day field trip event to SFU’s Burnaby campus on Thursday, May 15th. This event is targeted specifically towards Grade 10-12 students who are good at Math and are curious about a Math-based career. A maximum of 45 students are allowed on the overnight trip which is virtually free for participants. A charter bus will leave the district during the mid-day on Wednesday, May 14th and then travel to the lower mainland arriving by supper. The bus, accomodation, Wednesday supper and Thursday breakfast and lunch are provided and paid for by the CIA. Everyone will stay at SFU dorms for the Wednesday evening. The Thursday event itself runs from 9AM-3PM with participants leaving to go back to the southern interior afterwards. Students only need to provide for their Wednesday lunch and Thursday supper on the road.

Students will learn about careers in the Data Sciences, especially that of an Actuary. An actuary is a professional who evaluates and manages financial risk using mathematical and statistical methods. They analyze the likelihood of future events and help businesses and clients develop strategies to minimize the impact of undesirable outcomes. In essence, actuaries are experts in assessing and managing financial risk.

Please note the student deadline to register for this field trip is Wednesday, April 30th. Students that are interested in attending need to register at their school’s career office with a career coordinator or clerk and need a parent permission form to attend. If you wish more information about the event, please don’t hesitate to reach out to SD83 Career Education Coordinator George Richard via text or phone at 778-824-1188 or email grichard@sd83.bc.ca.
