Okanagan College Gateway to Technology Program Coordinator Leanne Clare and Instructor Joshua Meikle (right) explain the program and the College’s expectation to some SD83 dual credit students.

It’s opening day for SD83 students coming into Okanagan College’s Gateway (G2T) Program. The 12 Grade 10-12 students come from Salmon Arm, JL Jackson, Al Fortune and Pleasant Valley Secondaries. The students have the opportunity to earn dual credits, whereas they can receive four high school credits towards graduation and a Workplace Training Certificate from Okanagan College when completed. Parents do not have to pay tuition for enrolling their child into the post-secondary course.

Students will be learning advanced subjects like wireless networks, network management, cyber security, hardware components, scripting and programming languages and platforms like Linux, LAMP, Java Script, HTML, CCS and SQL. Students that complete this course have the opportunity to enroll in another dual credit program, Information Technology User Support. This micro-credential course allows students to pick up another 8 credits towards high school graduation and cover two courses in Okanagan College’s Infrastructure and Computing Technology Diploma Program. Once again, tuition for this program is covered by the school district as long as the student is on track to graduate high school before turning 20.

SD83 Career Programs will be having its first ever dual credit night November 7th in Salmon Arm and November 8th in Armstrong. Parents and students can learn more about the current and new offerings for dual credit courses offered in School District 83. If this or other dual credit programs in SD83 interests you, don’t hesitate to reach out to George Richard via text or phone at 778-824-1188 or you can email him at grichard@sd83.bc.ca.
