ERS Students Do the Math in SD83 Careers Event
Over 20 Eagle River Secondary students learned more about a low-profile math career this week.
Math and Woodwork Students partook in a virtual event sponsored by SD83 Careers and the Canadian Institute of Actuaries (CIA). The CIA is a representative association for the profession. The CIA reps outlined, just like many other jobs out there, of a growing demand for these professionals to do this work. Actuaries analyze the financial costs of risk and uncertainty. They work as consultants for business or with insurance companies where they use math to estimate how costly environment changes such as climate events and disasters cost individuals and organizations. The CIA made presentations to most Grade Eight students at Shuswap Middle School in February.
Students learned about some of the needed attributes for being an actuary, the post-secondary schooling required, the money that can be earned and the problem-solving questions they must handle as part of their jobs. Following this, Grade 11 and 12 Pre-Calculus students of Mr. Miese got into groups to play a Jeopardy game where they tried to solve problems that involved big data, probability, forecasting and money.
If you have ideas on future career discussions and class presentations that can take place in a Grades K-12 environment, please contact George Richard via phone or text at 778-824-1188 or you can email grichard@sd83.bc.ca.
