DFO Fishing for Future Workers at District Schools

Posted on 2023-04-05 07:00:00 +0000 UTC

Canada’s Department of Fisheries and Oceans are visiting SD83 Secondary schools seeing if they can snag some future workers hook, line and sinker.

Four DFO employees, as well as one representative from B.C.’s Conservation Service, are speaking to Grade 10-12 students at four of the six district high schools this week to talk about careers within their organizations.

DFO Community Advisor Melissa Hack (Back to Camera) addresses nearly 40 Grade 10 and 11 students in the Eagle River Secondary Gym in Sicamous on Tuesday.

Students are learning about opportunities with the federal service which includes careers in enforcement, stock assessment, community advising and other supporting sectors within the government department. They also explained opportunities not only for seasonal jobs for university students but also high school students. Shona Bruce from the Kingfisher Interpretive Society also shared the volunteer opportunities that existed at the site 25 minutes east of Enderby and how those opportunities can work into work experience credits for high school students.

The officers visited SAS-Sullivan and Eagle River Secondary on Tuesday and will talk with AL Fortune and Pleasant Valley Secondary students on Wednesday. On Tuesday, April 25th, the DFO and SD83 Careers will sponsor a full-day, hands-on field trip at the Kingfisher Interpretive Centre for a maximum of 20 students. The select 20 students will have an opportunity to actually go through an enforcement simulation and will also go into the Shuswap River to do fish counting and other biologist work, among other activities.

If you or your child is interested in taking part in this experience, please talk to your school’s career coordinator or reach out to District Career Coordinator George Richard text or phone at 778-824-1188.
